Domestic Solid Wastes:

Solid wastes generated in households generally are not segregated and directly disposed off in bins. They contain 30-40% organic matter comprising food wastes, vegetable and fruit peels, leftover foods etc. Generally packed in polythene bags and disposed off. When disposed improperly, foul odors and air pollution caused. Attracts pests and rodents which transmit diseases. Converting wastes to manure is an option but needs segregation manually. Lack of manpower leads to improper disposal and treatment. Require individual units for operation. Require high capital cost, operational costs and skilled manpower. Composting done in open piles. Non-biodegradable materials not completely utilized. Often polythene bags contain leftover organic matter which stinks. Lead to piles of woody materials, rags and trash which cannot be disposed off.
